CHAPTER 14

Luxen

Chuckling laughter woke him. Demon laughter. Luxen squinted into the gloom, trying to make sense of the shadows and his unfamiliar surroundings. Solo… The bed beside him was empty, the sheets ruffled. An angel’s bed. He rubbed at his forehead, beneath his right horn. An ether overload had left his thoughts fogged and his body wrecked, in the best way, but something was wrong.

He wasn’t alone.

“Things I thought I’d never see… Lord Luxen drunk on angel, in an angel’s bed.”

Samiel.

Instincts cleared some of the fog in Luxen’s head. He focused on the hulking shape of demon moving through the shadows at the far end of the chamber. Samiel picked up some porcelain trinket of Solo’s and examined it in his clawed hands—a small porcelain cat. “Hm…” His thick fingers squeezed, and the trinket shattered. “Oops.”

“Samiel…” Luxen croaked. Why was he here? Had he taken Solo? Where was Solo? “What’s going on?”

“You know, when a friend told me he’d seen you in the skies above Aerie, I said no, that’s not possible. Luxen would never fly with angels. But here you are, fucking one.”

Samiel’s words were clipped, sharp with restrained anger. The demon had been passionate about defending themselves, as all demons were. But Samiel had been loyal to Luxen through it all. So much so that he’d lied to his lifelong friend Konstantin for Luxen, for the cause.

His rage at finding Luxen in an angel’s bed wasn’t difficult to figure out. Samiel’s being here could not end well for anyone. Luxen slid his legs from the bed and pulled on his trousers, discreetly searching for any kind of weapon should Samiel’s anger boil over into something more physical. He’d been able to order Samiel around before, but things had changed. Luxen was no longer High Lord. They were equal. No, not equal. Samiel was above Luxen; his prowess in battle and his size made it so.

Luxen crossed the floor and met Samiel in the middle of the room. He kept his wings high, higher than Samiel’s. His wings, at least, were bigger. “Samiel, you need to leave. If you’re found here, they’ll kill you.”

Samiel shrugged a shoulder and wing. “Maybe. Did you think this happy little union was going to last?” He circled his finger in the air. “Did you think I was going to let you just… fly away after what you did to me?”

“Samiel, we did what was necessary at the time. Perhaps… we were wrong.”

Samiel bared his teeth. “I followed my High Lord’s orders! I did everything ordered of me. I bowed down to your fucking rule, Luxen. I betrayed Konstantin for you.”

“For the cause. Not for me.”

Samiel snorted. “The cause?” He laughed and circled around, thick muscles quivering. “Here’s how it’s going to be… Right now, the angels are losing their shit because Lord Luxen has escaped and killed one of them. Oh no, so terrible. They’d already decided we were going to die, but instead of leaving us in that rat-infested glass tank to
